I just wrapped up reading the Court of Midnight and Deception trilogy by K. M. Shea. It is an urban fantasy, romance trilogy that takes place in Shea's larger universe centered around Magiford, a supernatural city. The story focuses on Leila, a half-human half-fae girl living on a farm with her mom and step-dad, ready to embark on the next phase of her life: being a responsible adult. Her plans are abruptly changed when night mares select her as the next queen of the Night Court.
It's a job she doesn't want but can't escape. It's also a job that places a huge target on her back, including multiple assassination attempts. The first one coming from Riegel, an attractive fae male lord that has built up an infamous reputation as the assassin known as Wraith.
Book 1 in the trilogy focuses on Leila's attempts to unite her court and free them from being dependent on the never ending cycle of lies and deception.
In book 2 we find Leila interacting more monarchs from the other courts. Her goal remains the same, of trying to unite the fae but on a higher level.
Finally book 3, we see Leila and the other courts unite in an attempt to thwart an evil that threatens the existence of all the regional courts.
I started reading the trilogy mostly as filler between the release of book 2 in the Gate of Myth and Power trilogy. The books exist in the same universe and there are characters that are referenced in both series.
Court of Midnight and Deception isn't my favorite trilogy, but it was entertaining. My biggest negative is I felt there was a little too much filler dialog and found myself speed reading through several parts of it.
